The Science Behind LivRing®: Controlled-Release Vaginal Lubrication

LivRing is intentionally designed to be a different kind of solution to vaginal discomfort. It utilizes a non-hormonal vaginal lubricant contained inside a flexible ring that is inserted into the vagina. LivRing offers up to 7 days (each ring) of continuous moisturization without the use of pharmaceutical ingredients.

The secret to LivRing's success can be discovered in the science of how it works. In short, it is all about controlled release. Our water-based lubricant is slowly released by way of an elastic biomedical-grade hydrophilic polyurethane membrane. More importantly, LivRing has been cleared by the FDA as a vaginal lubricant and moisturizer.

The Basic Concept

LivRing is based on a simple concept: providing continual vaginal moisturization through the gradual application of a moisturizing lubricant. Through gradual release, we eliminate the need for single dose lubrication that can dissipate very quickly. Gradual lubricating moisturization more closely mimics what the body should do naturally.

To work as a controlled-release vaginal lubricating moisturizer, a product needs to incorporate a reservoir to contain the lubricating / moisturizing substance, and a semi-permeable, rate-controlling membrane. It also needs some type of mechanical support to keep the reservoir in place. LivRing works so well because our biomedical-grade polyurethane tube membrane does all 3! It holds in the moisturizing lubricant (USP-grade glycerin), controls its release, and forms the traditional vaginal ring shape.

As the moisturizing lubricant is slowly released, it provides continual lubrication for up to 7 days. Some topical products dissipate within a matter of hours.

A Better Approach

We believe that controlled-release vaginal moisturization is a better approach because it mimics natural body function more closely. There are benefits to doing so, which include:

  • Prolonged Moisturization – Controlled-release products prolong delivery of lubrication. The end result is more consistency and increased comfort. A woman experiences lubricating moisturization for days rather than hours.
  • Improved Maintenance – Controlled-release products enhance vaginal care. Simply put, consistent hydration may help maintain vaginal tissue integrity and elasticity.
  • Improved Adherence – Because the duration is increased up to 7 days, women may find product adherence easier. A woman does nott have to stop and apply a lubricant prior to intimacy. Simply inserting a new ring at the same time every week is all it takes.

More closely mimicking the way the body naturally functions leads to a better experience. Controlled-release vaginal moisturization is a minimally disruptive method to relieve some symptoms of vaginal dryness.

More About the Membrane

LivRing's biomedical-grade hydrophilic polyurethane membrane is at the heart of it all. It is made with a polyurethane material for strength and flexibility. It is also hydrophilic, meaning that it “likes water.” It interacts with water through hydrogen bonding, to the extent that it readily absorbs.

While the membrane interacts with water, it gradually releases the lubricating agent inside the ring. This is possible due to the membrane's permeable nature. The lubricant molecules inside gradually move through the membrane at a consistent rate. That way, you get controlled moisturization for up to 7 days rather than one big outpour that only lasts for a few hours.

The biomedical-grade hydrophilic polyurethane membrane has been demonstrated as safe to use in continuous, long-term vaginal application through clinical studies and extensive FDA-required biocompatibility testing. The same types of medical grade material used to make LivRing are widely used throughout healthcare for producing medical devices and implants.

Give LivRing a Try

Vaginal dryness is no fun. In addition to causing daily discomfort, it truly can ruin the sexual experience – especially for women with reduced estrogen levels. We invite you to learn more about LivRing and how it could help through long-action moisturization.
